Interview with Professor Tu Yaoyuan, the founder of the Snite Prize of the Nondestructive Testing Society
On August 23-24, 2016, the "Sixth Non-destructive Testing Higher Education Development Forum" was held in Zhuhai, Guangdong. This forum was different from the previous ones. There was an important agenda to be held during the conference, and that was the first place of the Chinese Society of Non-destructive Testing. "Academic Award"-"Snet Award of China Nondestructive Testing Society" was awarded for the first time. What kind of award is this? Why is it set up? How is the selection made? With these many questions, the editor of Materials and Testing Network was fortunate to interview the founder of the award and Professor Tu Yaoyuan of East China University of Science and Technology.
Professor Tu Yaoyuan: born in 1940, successively taught at Nanchang Hangkong University and East China University of Science and Technology. He participated in the founding of China’s first undergraduate major in "Non-destructive Testing" at the former Nanchang Institute of Aeronautics and Technology (the predecessor of Nanchang Hangkong University), and was later transferred to East China University of Science and Technology. The university continues to teach in non-destructive testing; after retirement, he is committed to promoting the development of China’s non-destructive testing education and informatization. In 1996, the Standing Council of the Non-destructive Testing Branch of the Mechanical Engineering Society approved the establishment of the "China Non-destructive Testing Information Center" based on the recommendation of Professor Tu Yaoyuan. It is decided that Professor Tu Yaoyuan will be the head of the center. The information center has successively established the Information Network of the Nondestructive Testing Society, the "NDT Information Summary" report, the Nondestructive Testing Higher Education Development Forum, the "China Nondestructive Testing Yearbook", the Nondestructive Testing Society Snet Award, etc. ; The Non-destructive Testing Branch of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society awarded it "Special Contribution Award" and "Lifetime Achievement Award" successively.
As a well-known expert in non-destructive testing who has been engaged in higher education for many years, you are full of peach and plum. After many years of retirement, why do you want to set up such an award as the "China Non-destructive Testing Society Snet Award"? What was the opportunity that made you start the creation of this award?
The information center was established in 1996 without any funds. I used my research funds to carry out activities before I retired. After retirement, the research funding is gone, and the activities should continue. At this time, the society agreed to establish a training center (ie, the Shanghai Snet Nondestructive Testing Personnel Training Center), and use the training income to support the activities of the information center. The establishment of the training center gave me a certain amount of economic income, which enabled me to carry out various activities more conveniently, and then I had a basis for doing more work in information services and personnel training and certification. The society affirmed the work I did and gave me a high honor, which made me feel ashamed. From the time I graduated from university to today, I have done one thing: non-destructive testing, including 16 years of flaw detection in the aircraft factory, 20 years of teaching non-destructive testing courses at the university, and 16 years of information service and personnel training after retirement. So I know very well that it is the non-destructive testing technology that gave me the opportunity to achieve results, and the countless help from the leaders, colleagues and friends who worked with me. As a traditional intellectual, I should know how to be grateful, and I must know how to be grateful. Use grateful actions to promote the development of non-destructive testing technology and the training of non-destructive testing talents. In the past ten years, I have repeatedly supported and sponsored various academic activities of the society, but I think the key to technological development is talents, and I will use long-term uninterrupted actions to promote the cultivation of non-destructive testing talents. It can be said that gratitude is my recognition, reward is my action, and motivation is my purpose.
Which non-destructive testing personnel are selected for the "China Nondestructive Testing Society Snett Award"? Can you briefly introduce the selection criteria?
The selection of the Snite Prize will be linked to the types of non-destructive testing talents. There are three types of non-destructive testing talents: engineering inspectors (that is, inspectors with 1, 2 and 3 certificates who work in the front line), and are engaged in technical applications and management. Of non-destructive testing project managers (mainly non-destructive testing engineers), scientific research personnel engaged in non-destructive testing scientific research. There is also a reserve army of these three types of personnel: students studying non-destructive testing (including college undergraduates, masters and doctoral students). In 2016, 8 university students, 4 graduate students and 2 scientific researchers were selected for the first time. You show students and you show graduate students are selected from May to June every year, with a total of 8 college or undergraduate students (there are more than 20 colleges and universities in the country with non-destructive testing or similar majors), and you show graduate students 4 (you show graduate students must provide one Papers were presented at the annual meeting of the forum). Other awards are selected every two years (synchronized with the Nondestructive Testing Higher Education Development Forum). This year, two Youxiu scientific researchers were selected. In 2018, in addition to the Youxiu scientific researcher, the Youxiu non-destructive testing engineer and the Youxiu non-destructive inspector will also be selected.
I would like to ask which experts select the "China Nondestructive Testing Society Snett Prize" in what way?
The selection committee is composed of five experts: the director is Dr. Geng Rongsheng, who served as the second chairman of the Chinese Society for Nondestructive Testing, and the deputy director is Dr. Tian Guiyun (a British Chinese nondestructive testing expert with a broad international perspective). The members are: Professor Huang Songling from Tsinghua University, Professor Lu Chao from Nanchang Hangkong University, and Associate Professor Liu Qingyan from East China University of Science and Technology. There is a unified application and evaluation procedure for various awards. After the judging committee receives the application (recommendation) for each award, the committee members will first submit their evaluation opinions based on the evaluation conditions, and then send the evaluation form to the director of the jury for summary, and the director of the jury will determine the list of winners based on the number of votes. The director of the judges submits the review results to the award committee for approval. Except for Youxiu students and Youxiu graduate students, the list and deeds of other awards will be publicized on the Society Information Network for more than one month, and the decision on whether to approve or not will be made based on the results of the announcement.
On July 19, 2015, a joint meeting of the award committee and the review committee of the "Chinese Society for Nondestructive Testing Snite Award" was held in the secretariat office of the Society for Nondestructive Testing
What kind of incentive measures does the "China Nondestructive Testing Society Snet Award" have? How can I participate in the election?
Winners can receive certificates and bonuses (the current prize amount ranges from 3,000 yuan to 20,000 yuan), and the deeds will be announced on the information network of the society. Whether the winners of the You Show tester can be linked to the research needs to be studied. Participation methods: unit recommendation, institution recommendation, expert recommendation, personal recommendation are all good (mainly not to miss a real you show). The Information Network of the China Society for Non-Destructive Testing is the publishing platform for the Snet Award. All award documents, evaluation results, and you show deeds are kept online. You can click: www.chsndt.org/list.php?fid=61 to view the files and List of winners. Or browse: www.chsndt.org's "Reward Information" section.
Do you have any new ideas and ideas for the future selection of the "Chinese Society of Non-destructive Testing Snite Award"?
The future work is mainly to standardize the selection activities, to be fair and just, so that the evaluation activities can promote the growth and progress of non-destructive testing talents, and cultivate and establish industry stars. This is the first time this year. There is no experience, and the rewards have not reached the planned goal. In 2018, you will be selected for the first time for you show non-destructive testing engineers and you show inspectors. Intend to select you show by holding a non-destructive testing competition
The "Non-destructive Testing Higher Education Development Forum" was founded by you in 2005, and this year is the 6th. Please also talk about the original intention of establishing this forum, and what can be better for the development of this forum in the future Vision?
Yes, twelve years ago, I discussed with the teachers of eight universities at that time about providing a platform for talent training in non-destructive testing universities, mainly to carry out non-destructive testing teaching research, discuss how universities can integrate with enterprises, and another very important decision Yes: The forum should give graduate students an opportunity to publish and read papers. In fact, the papers of graduate students from various colleges and universities at each annual conference accounted for a large proportion, and a certain number of graduate students also read papers. Because it is a college-based forum, each annual meeting is relatively "desolate" and "poor". Combining with the Sneider Prize award ceremony from the sixth annual meeting is a promotion and support to the forum.
You participated in the establishment of non-destructive testing higher education, and also participated in the qualification and certification of non-destructive testing personnel. These are important links in the training of non-destructive testing personnel. Can you introduce your insights on the cultivation of non-destructive testing talents?
I recently studied the structure of non-destructive testing talents and drew a picture, which I call "the pagoda of non-destructive testing talents." From the perspective of the number of personnel, the basis of the pagoda is the level 1, 2, and 3 personnel engaged in inspection projects. According to my statistics of 10 domestic industries at the end of 2015, there are 104779 people holding level 1 certificates, 226888 people at level 2, and 11962 at level 3. People, a total of about 343629 certificates (of course, excluding the case of multiple certificates for one person, the actual number of certificate holders is less than this number). The requirement for this part of the personnel is to use good equipment and do the inspection work in accordance with the regulations (some personnel can participate in the formulation of the regulations) and standards.
The backbone of the pagoda is the non-destructive testing engineers and technicians. Their main tasks are: one is to apply non-destructive testing technology in various industries, and the other is to manage large and small non-destructive testing institutions (non-destructive testing departments and teams). The number of this group of people is obviously smaller than that of level personnel, but a considerable part of them overlaps with level 3 personnel. In our country, the boundary between this group of people and Level 3 personnel is not very clear.
My opinion is that the non-destructive testing engineer who is engaged in the application and management of non-destructive testing engineering should be a Level 3 person, otherwise he cannot manage the following front-line testing work. However, Level 3 personnel are not necessarily non-destructive testing engineers. Some are and some are not. This is limited by academic qualifications and work content. The concept of non-destructive testing engineers was not clear in the past. On June 2, 2016, the China Mechanical Engineering Society joined the Washington Agreement. The internationally recognized engineer qualifications will soon be the same as those of Level 1, 2, and 3, requiring training and certification. Obtained. I won't say much about the time relationship here, and I will elaborate on it later in the discussion.
The spire of the pagoda is the least number of scientific researchers, but their role in the non-destructive testing industry is very important. New methods, new equipment, and new technologies rely on them to research and develop.
The above three groups of people are indispensable to the nondestructive testing industry, and their status is equally important, but the division of labor and responsibilities are different. Most of their training is completed by higher education, and only a few have not received higher education. After graduating from colleges, personnel began to be diverted. Some continued to study for graduate school and might enter the R&D team, some entered engineering companies for testing, and some went to application and management after graduating from undergraduate or postgraduate studies.
From another perspective, the establishment of the Snyder Prize is also to promote the cultivation and development of talents. Therefore, I set up the You Show Student Award and You Show Postgraduate Award in colleges and universities to encourage students to study hard. For graduates who have stepped out of colleges and entered the society, the You Show Inspector Award (evaluated by level 1, 2, and 3 personnel through the competition) and You Show Nondestructive Testing Engineer Award (evaluated in the application and management) will be established to match the talent pagoda. , Innovation Contribution Award (evaluated in universities and research institutes). The You Show Graduate Award is mainly for students who have graduated from non-destructive testing majors (including college, undergraduate and graduate students). They may be R&D personnel or engineering and technical personnel.
Finally, as a senior worker in the non-destructive testing industry, please also send your message to the young people in the industry to encourage them to better serve the non-destructive testing industry.
Young non-destructive testing workers are the backbone of the industry. The future belongs to you. I sincerely hope:
First, we must work on the ground and accumulate knowledge and experience from the grassroots level. If I did not have 16 years of front-line work experience in an aircraft factory, it would be impossible for me to have subsequent teaching results in university;
Second, be diligent and good at collecting and sorting out materials, summarizing and extracting the essence from the complicated materials to write articles. A person who is lazy to write is impossible to achieve results;
Third, you must be grateful, and you must know how to thank anyone who has helped you, even if it is just a few words of help. Because today's gratitude (en) is the prerequisite for getting new help tomorrow.
